After going on hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Taste of Arvada — a local favorite highlighting the community's food scene — returned to the Apex Center on July 22. The event sold out its 1,500-ticket capacity and hosted 30 food and drink booth and over 70 total vendors.
Local bands the Pocket Squares and Bird Dawgs provided live music, and the parking lot and gymnasiums of the Apex Center housed the event space. For the price of admission, attendees were able to help themselves to a smattering of food and drink options and learn more about local businesses such as the Lane Academy of Martial Arts and Peak One Art Studio.
The event is organized by the Arvada Chamber of Commerce in partnerships with local businesses.
Chamber of Commerce Events Director Samantha Geerdes said that Taste has taken on added significance for the community.
“It's really special this year,” said Geerdes. “Obviously, we haven't been able to get together and celebrate for quite a bit, so it's really special this year to get great people to celebrate what makes Arvada amazing. And it's the restaurants, the bars, the wine, all the amazing things that we are able to offer from local businesses, nonprofits and artisans.”
Darla Peterson has volunteered at Taste for five years and said she continues to support the event because of how it brings the community together.
“It's exciting to see the people here every year,” said Peterson. “It just exciting to see the community come together. Arvada is a very strong community and I think that this event brings people a little bit closer together, (allows them) to be in a safe environment and feel good. You're seeing one another for maybe the first time in a year.”
Jamie Poeling owns Dream Dinners, a service that provides ingredients for easy-to-prepare meals that can be made in about 20 minutes. Poeling started Dream Dinners in 2002 and moved her business to Arvada shortly before the Coronavirus pandemic hit. She said the Chamber has helped her keep Dream Dinners afloat throughout the pandemic.
“I'm really actively involved in the chamber, so Samantha (Geerdes) invited me,” said Poeling. “They've just been so supportive through COVID. We're just trying to get our name out, and this is how we get our name out. Last year, there wasn't any of this.”
Geerdes added that the laid-back atmosphere of the event seemed especially needed with all Arvada has gone through in the past year.
“Arvada is an amazing community that supports each other and is here for each other,” said Geerdes. “And when things get tough, they're here for each other, but we also want to be there and celebrate together that we're getting through this pandemic and getting through the hard things. Here, you can just come out for a night with your friends, enjoy some music, some food and drinks and just celebrate the fact that we get to live in this amazing place.”
