Parker’s town hall is set to see a boost in the next few years as planning begins for its expansion.
Town hall, built in 2003, has become overcrowded in recent years, with staff members taking over storage closets as offices and moving to different facilities.
“We have really gotten to that point where town hall is that first domino from a large view perspective of the needs of the town,” said Jim Gilbert, deputy director of operations.
The expansion was approved as part of the town’s facility master plan in April and was one of the largest projects recommended. Now, the town is working to identify a team of consultants and architects to begin design work.
The town council will need to approve those contracts for the project to officially be underway.
About 18 staff members, including the cultural staff, engineering and IT have their offices offsite due to the space limitations in town hall. Instead, they work in the old town hall, located next to the current one.
The town hopes the expansion will allow the full staff to work in one building, freeing them to do something new with the old town hall facility, Gilbert said.
The town council will decide what will be done with that facility, which was built in the late 1980s. It could be demolished with something new built for the town there or it could be sold to another party.
The current town hall has been feeling congested for at least the past seven years, Gilbert said.
The town hasn’t yet decided exactly what will be done during the expansion, but it’s likely to be discussed in the next few months. When the building was constructed, it was designed to someday have space added to the east side, Gilbert said. Other options are to expand to the south or west.
The public-facing portion of the building, such as the council chambers, will likely see some renovation as well, he said.
The current timeline shows the project being completed near the end of 2024. It is set to be funded through general fund reserves. The facility master plan has it earmarked to cost about $20.2 million.
During the next 15 to 30 years, the town expects its operational staff to grow by about 80 people as the town’s population grows.
The town council has not yet set a date to consider contracts with architects and consultants.
