I grew up in south Denver and graduated from Thomas Jefferson in 1982. My family has lived in Castle Rock for the past 13 years in Sapphire Pointe. I am newly remarried and the father of three (two graduated from Douglas County High School) and stepfather of two.
I owned a marketing firm in Denver for many years and transitioned to speaking almost 20 years ago. Today, I am a full-time professional keynote speaker and consultant on marketing and customer experience. I speak to audiences of business owners and professionals around the world about creating competitive advantage in their companies. I am not a "motivational speaker" per se, but I am very funny and entertaining on stage. I use humor strategically to temper a pretty tough message about what it takes to compete and win in business today. To date, I have written four business books including the popular “It's Not Who You Know, It's Who Knows You,” and one “sappy dad” book.
What's next for me
My newest book is called “Why Customers Leave (and How to Win Them Back)” and it is being released in early April! I think it's my best book so far. Very relatable and conversational. Foreign language editions will also be coming out soon in Russia, China and India!
What I most enjoy about my career
I love to teach from the stage, but the travel is a double-edged sword. That said, I do recognize what a privilege it is. My mom died at 69 and never owned a passport. I have spoken in 24 countries around the world in recent years, including Singapore, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, London, Johannesburg, Barcelona, Sydney and Dubai. Travel is hard, but a necessary part of my business. Developing relationships with international clients and taking the time to explore their countries has really broadened my perspective and given me a newfound appreciation for other cultures and how alike we are.
I have a simple mantra posted on the wall above my desk. It says: “I want to spend my life doing things that matter with people who care.”
