Born and raised in Australia
I came over here in 2000 — up until 2000 I had never been out of Australia. Originally, I came over for college reasons. I was studying business and tourism and I decided to finish that here. I had to go back at the end of my visa, but I came back a year later and stayed and got a green card and eventually became a citizen.
Owning a 'mom and pop'
We've had our business, Heygidday, at 703 Wilcox St., operating about 15 years. We were an online business for a long time but about two years ago added retail. We're primarily an embroidery and engraving business. We can embroider motorcycle patches, military patches, shirts and hats and that sort of thing. Anything metal, we can engrave.
We're part of the chamber locally and we're actively seeking community involvement, whereas a couple years ago we didn't do any of that. We were totally underground and totally online. More than three quarters of all of our business is still online. We ship to 20 countries every day. We have a lot of shipping operations but we're still pretty mom-and-pop.
A love for motorcycles
We're active riders. We have a Harley, but we're also open seven days a week, so we don't ride as much as we'd like to. But we're really active and sort of really actively involved in motorcycle-related activities and events.
My wife and I are going to go to Australia this year for the first time in 15 years. It's really hard to fit it around our business. I've got no family here at all. I've got grandchildren I've never seen.
There's a big Australian saying: It's just life, be in it. It's a big Australian campaign which fights against laziness, that sort of thing.
