Lauren Pendergast, sometimes better known by her nickname of LP, changed positions this season and still led the Regis Jesuit field hockey team in points.
Pendergast moved to center midfield this season and finished with 30 points (11 goals, eight assists) and helped the Raiders advance to the state finals.
LP is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Field Hockey Player of the Year.
“I practiced a lot during the off season and also changed positions,” said Pendergast. “I used to play on the outside. I was a winger on the right mid. I played center mid this year so that was a little different, more of moving the ball around, and it allowed me to get up and score more goals.
“I really enjoyed the new position. I enjoyed having a more central role. I play soccer too and I’m a center mid so it’s a position I’m accustomed to.”
Regis Jesuit coach Spencer Wagner praised the play of Pendergast.
“She was our number one playmaker this season and led us to a championship last season with her goals,” said Wagner. “No one has made more of an impact on our last two seasons that our captain Lauren Pendergast.”
Pendergast started playing field hockey as a freshman.
“I wanted a fall sport and I heard from some upperclassmen that played and they really enjoyed it,” recalled Pendergast. “I tried out and decided I really liked the sport.”
Pendergast has “LP” included on the rosters handed out at games.
“That’s what everyone calls me,” said LP. “I was playing soccer years ago and we had three girls named Lauren on the team. Coach asked me what was my nickname and I said I didn’t have one. He said, then you are LP. Most of my family and friends call me LP.”
