The Mountain Vista boys basketball team’s dream of playing in a state-championship game for the first time in program history will have to wait at least another year.

The Golden Eagles, the No. 1 seed in the Class 6A tournament, ran into a fast, physical and hot-shooting Denver East team March 10 in the Final Four at the Denver Coliseum.

Five Angels scored in double figures, including Austin Mohr, who had a double-double, in East’s 86-67 win.

Senior Caden Stevens scored a team-high 16 points for the Golden Eagles, who led 37-35 early in the third quarter but were outscored 51-30 the rest of the way. Vista’s other top scorers were Brendan Diehl and Cal Baskind, who scored 12 points apiece, and Zach Bowen and Radek Homer, who each had 11 points.

The Golden Eagles, winners of the 6A/5A Continental League title after going 10-0, end their season with a 24-3 record overall. It was Vista’s fourth Final Four appearance in program history.
