The school bus driver accused of causing an accident that left a 92-year-old woman dead in 2018 has been sentenced after pleading guilty to careless driving resulting in death.
Steven Blair, of Franktown, then 70, was charged with careless driving resulting in death and failing to yield the right of way when turning left at the intersection of Fifth and Perry streets in Castle Rock. The Dec. 7, 2018 accident left Barbara Riehl, of Castle Rock, dead.
Blair pleaded guilty on May 15 to careless driving, according to a spokeswoman for the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office.
He was sentenced on June 10 to 250 hours of useful public service, one year of supervised probation and ordered to make a $1,000 donation to the victim's favorite charity, the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Blair was driving a school bus for Colorado Early Colleges Network, a charter school system, at the time of the accident. Five teenagers were on board, but no one other than Riehl was injured.
Riehl had to be extricated from her vehicle and transported to an area hospital, where she later died. Police said at the time they believed Blair pulled out in front of Riehl, causing the collision.
The spokeswoman for the 18th Judicial District said the court considered Blair's lack of criminal history and the lack of allegations he was driving distracted when deciding against sentencing him to any jail time.
