Choose Wilson and science

I am writing as a resident of Castle Rock and a mom of three to support for Darien Wilson for Douglas County commissioner. Our commissioners play a critical role and are responsible for our health, safety and welfare. It has become clear to me that our current commissioners, including Ms. Wilson’s opponent, are derelict in that responsibility.

Our current commissioners voted to withdraw our county from Tri-County Health with no clear indication of a replacement option during a pandemic. But in a recent interview with this newspaper, Ms. Wilson’s opponent indicated she didn’t necessarily mean it. How can we be expected to trust a commissioner who lacks transparency and changes her statement depending on the political winds? As one who loves supporting small, local business and who wants my children to be able to keep attending school, I trust Tri-County Health to use science, data and facts to make decisions that make it safe for me to do so. Further, I trust that Ms. Wilson will similarly trust in science and data and those who use them.

Ms. Wilson has the intellect and diplomacy to bring our community together in a way that benefits all of us, and while now I trust her leadership to guide us through COVID-19, longer term I am eager to have Ms. Wilson lead us to increase support for mental health and public safety.

I’m ready for a commissioner whose top concern is Douglas County residents, not politics. I believe Darien Wilson is that candidate.
