A Castle Rock man accused of murdering his mother is back in Colorado to face several charges after he was arrested in Florida earlier this month.

Matthew Buchanan, 32, was transported to the Douglas County Detention Facility on May 26 from Monroe County, Florida, where he was arrested on May 3 in connection with his mother’s death and house fire in Castle Rock on April 26.

Police hope to charge Buchanan with two first-degree murder charges, as well as first-degree arson, tampering with a deceased body, criminal mischief, tampering with physical evidence and two counts of animal cruelty, all of which are felonies.

The Castle Rock Police Department turned the case over to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

On April 26, castle Rock police responded to a house fire in the Terrain neighborhood, where they found the body of Elizabeth Bjorlow, 59. Another person was also injured in the fire and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A request for Buchanan’s arrest warrant was denied because the warrant is suppressed. Buchanan is scheduled to be in court on June 8.
