Know what it’s all about
This is a response to Jen Wilking’s Living and Aging Well column in March titled “Yoga is practical method to achieve more ease in aging.” Jan wrote an informative article and her comments on the physical benefits of yoga were valid. I previously practiced yoga up to three times weekly over the span of 25 years and enjoyed the benefits of the stretching elements of the class.
Recently, I learned that yoga has components that everyone may not be aware of. Yoga is described this way by Wikipedia: “ Yoga is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India. There is a broad variety of yoga schools, practices, and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.”
Because of this definition it becomes clear that yoga is not only an exercise and I suggest researching the background of yoga before participating in the practice of it.
