Before 1987, Castle Rock voters elected their mayor. That changed and, according to him two weeks ago, Cliff Orr and a few others signed the charter in July 1987 that took that right from them. I - with many other Castle Rock voters - want that right returned to us! Council simply could have put this issue on the ballot like the three other charter change issues and TABOR question in the last three years so the voters could decide but refused. So, as citizens of this town, Colorado, and the United States, we must exercise our right to petition our government.
Incidentally, this month in history, on June 5, 1919, women earned the paramount victory in their strenuous and lengthy battle to vote. It is not a privilege, it is a right! And in 1987, Mr. Orr and the other signers charter took that right from all Castle Rock voters. So on the topic of mayor in Castle Rock, we demand the opportunity to exercise that right once again - for ourselves, for our children, for our friends, for our neighbors, for our colleagues, for our community... for Castle Rock!
