Dry weather prompts fire department to call Fourth of July fireworks event

Castle Rock announced June 28 it has canceled the town's Fourth of July fireworks show as the area experiences dangerously dry weather conditions and record-high temperatures.

A town news release states if conditions improve and the fire hazard lessens, the show will be rescheduled.

The town typically shoots fireworks from atop the Santa Fe Quarry Mesa on Independence Day, but Colorado saw records highs the week of June 25.

The National Weather Service predicted temperatures in the Denver metro would soar over 100 the day of the announcement and recorded temperatures near Castle Rock lingering in the upper 90s by late afternoon on June 28.

The town remains under Stage 1 fire restrictions, and although the sale of fireworks is permitted the use of fireworks within town limits is illegal under the ban.

If the town instates Stage 2 fire restrictions, both the sale and use of fireworks would be prohibited, including professional fireworks displays, public or private.
