St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway returns to Castle Rock
The Meadows chosen for fund drive
Castle Rock rose to the top of the list for the second year in a row as the select Colorado community for the 2012 St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway.
The town was chosen by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, following the success of its Castle Rock experience in its inaugural Colorado 2011 fundraiser.
St. Jude for years has hosted its Dream Home Giveaway fundraiser across the country, raising money to support its quest to treat childhood cancer.
The Memphis, Tenn.-based hospital brought the program to Colorado in 2011 with a home in The Meadows, in an experience that placed Castle Rock as a premier example among communities nationwide, said Bonne McCalmont, St. Jude senior event marketing representative.
McCalmont addressed Town Council March 13 to begin the process of orchestrating community collaboration for a successful fund drive. The 2011 fund drive helped St. Jude raise about $1.1 million for the research hospital and placed the Castle Rock Dream Home among the hospital’s top fundraisers.
The drive was bolstered with a donation from the town of $20,000 in reduced building and permit fees, a request for financial participation that Town Council granted again this year. The fundraiser organizers aim to use the Castle Rock experience as a model nationwide, McCalmont said.
“We are very excited to be back in Castle Rock and in The Meadows again,” McCalmont said. “We had a great experience working with all of you last year.
“To date, Castle Rock Development (developer of The Meadows) has donated $25,000 toward the lot of the home. We have already had a large amount of support from the construction community. We want to be able to send as much money as possible to the kids at St. Jude’s.”
The 2012 Castle Rock Dream Home is under construction at 1665 Avery Way, with construction in the hands of Oakwood Homes. The finished product is expected to have a market value of about $500,000. Tickets for a chance to win the home will go on sale June 20, for $100 each, and are available through the St. Jude Dream Home website at dreamhome.org or by phone at 1-800-276-7695.
Last year’s winner was Yadira Estrada-Trevizo, a mother of two who was living with her extended family in her brother’s Lakewood home. The win made her a first-time homeowner, and she won the house after making four donations toward the 2011 fundraiser.
Town Council supported the proposal to provide financial support on the recommendation from the Castle Rock economic partnership, which pointed to the marketing and tourism benefits the St. Jude drive brings to the table.
“I think with the marketing we get, the people that come to Castle Rock, for us, ($20,000 is) a bargain,” said Mayor Paul Donahue. “It’s really great to begin to see that neighborhood begin to build up, too. I think it’s a good thing for the town as a whole.”
