Six pack of pins powers Ponderosa to big mat win
CASTLE ROCK - Ponderosa’s wrestling team surpassed its goal last Thursday night in a 63-12 Continental League dual meet victory over Castle
“Our team goal was to win by 40 so for us to hit that mark was good,” said Ponderosa 170-pounder Dylan Gabel. “I thought the guys wrestled well, they went out and were aggressive.
“We threw in a couple junior varsity kids that don’t normally wrestle.”
Ponderosa, which hasn’t lost a league dual meet in the past 18 seasons, used pins by Gabel, Kade Snider (113 pounds), Brett Guerrieri (132), Torry Williams (145), Kelton Good (152) and Chase Wright (220) to help swell the victory margin.
Mustang wrestlers notching wins by decision were Carl Schader (120), Brett Erklenz (160), Corry Williams (182) and York Douglas (195).
Ponderosa also collected two forfeit wins.
The Mustangs will now wrestle the winner of Thursday night’s Douglas County-Chaparral match for the Continental League championship next Thursday at Ponderosa.
“Our goal is to be more consistent,” said Ponderosa coach Corey McNellis. “We’ve improved a lot in the last couple weeks and I’m confident that we will peak when the time is right.”
Castle View’s only victories during the match came by pins from Rylan Houser (138) and Joe Hunsaker (285).
“At least we got a couple wins,” Castle View coach Nick Jasurda said. “We didn’t come out strong. We didn’t battle for a full six minutes. We need to work on better mat management.
“It was a great match for Rylan. He’s been doing the little things right. He keeps it tough and basic. Joe has come a long way this season. He’s wrestling smarter.”
