The DC Reign is a semiprofessional football team based in Douglas County. On Feb. 26, the team signed its first 35 players. The Reign are expected to sign an additional 20 players who could not attend the event.

“This is a big day that is near to my heart,” team owner Shua Reign told his players and staff. “All of us are here for the love of the game, and we will strive to make a difference in our community.”

“(I’m) looking forward to a great season and the chance to prove myself out on that field, ” running back Keith Cassell said.

Former Colorado Crush wide receiver Mike Cates was looking to make an impact “off the field and on.”

The DC Reign’s foray into the semipro world will not be easy with away games at Grand Junction, Idaho, Wyoming and Nebraska. Along with putting a strong effort on the field, the Reign is looking to make an equally strong impact off it.

Some ideas include a Breast Cancer Awareness Day and an Adopt-a-Pet Day with the National Mill Dog Rescue, based in Colorado Springs.

The Reign is being coached by Mike Rivera, with Mark Lindrud, Larry Russ and Jeff Gordon as assistant coaches. Kyle Zick will be the team’s trainer and conditioning coach.
