Roundup: Vieselmeyer leaving Valor Christian
Valor Christian is shopping for a new football coach.
Brent Vieselmeyer, who guided the Eagles to four consecutive state championships, is leaving to assume the role as defensive coordinator at Houston Baptist, a school that will be playing its first season of Division I football this fall.
Vieselmeyer, the Colorado Community Media Coach of the Year after the Eagles won the Class 5A state championship last November, compiled a 55-11 record in five seasons at Valor.
WRESTLING RANKINGS - In the latest On The Mat rankings, Ponderosa was listed as the No. 2 Class 5A team.
Five Mustangs athletes were among the top five rated wrestlers in their respective weight divisions.
Ponderosa’s Dylan Gabel was rated No. 1 at 170 pounds, Corry Williams No. 2 at 182 pounds, Kade Snider No. 3 at 113 pounds while Mustangs 145-pounder Torry Williams and 138 pounder Brighton Maye were both ranked No. 4.
Chaparral’s Frank Martinez was ranked No. 5 at 106 pounds and teammate Dane Drimmer was ranked No. 4 at 285 pounds
ThunderRidge 120 pounder Kyndall Rutz was listed fourth.
CHAPARRAL FIFTH - In the girls Class 5A swimming rankings through Dec. 31, Chaparral was fifth.
“Our team is having the best season in school history so far,” said Chaparral coach Brooke Westall. “The girls have already broken five team records and many meet records.”
Megan Grier has been a part of five schools records this season.
Her Chaparral records were 24.63 in the 50 freestyle, 53.50 in the 100 freestyle and 1:09.55 in the 100 breaststroke.
She was on the 200 freestyle relay team with Makenna Wilson Emma Waldman and Talia Colalancia that set a school record of 1:40.94
And Grier, Wilson, Annie Graves and Hannah Paris set a school standard of 3:38.87 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Colalancia established a new 100 butterfly school record of 59.72.
Individually in the compiled state statistics, ThunderRidge’s Annie Ochitwa has recorded the best time of 23.74 in the 50-yard freestyle and 51.72 in the 100-yard freestyle.
Wilson has posted the second quickest time in the 100-yard backstroke of 57.73. Mountain Vista’s Ashley Peterson’s 427.4 is the third best diving total so far this season.
ON THE ICE - Mountain Vista and Heritage’s hockey teams are both 4-0-0 in the Peak Conference.
Mountain Vista (7-1-0) whipped Valor Christian 8-1 last week and dropped a 2-0 non-conference decision to Regis Jesuit.
Heritage (6-1-0) lost to Monarch.
The Eagles’ Connor Crory leads the Peak Conference in scoring with 19 points on 12 goals and seven assists heading into this week’s action.
Michael Ellis of Mountain Vista has nine goals and eight assists and is tied for second in the scoring race with 17 points.
Ben Joseph of Valor Christian has 10 goals which rank third in the Peak Conference.
ON TOP - Valor Christian, after a win over previous No. 1 D’Evelyn, took over the top spot in the Class 4A boys basketball poll released Monday.
Arapahoe is the new top-ranked girls team in the Class 5A rankings.
Mountain Vista remains at No. 2 in the boys Class 5A ratings and ThunderRidge is No. 4.
Lutheran remains third in the Class 2A boys poll.
Highlands Ranch is fourth, Rock Canyon sixth and Chaparral seventh in the girls Class 5A poll while Lutheran is second in the Class 2A rankings.
