Locals to be honored at luncheon

An elbow injury forced Cat (Cathleen) Badillo to retire from gymnastics four years ago.

The Legend senior decided to plunge into diving and was second in the Class 5A diving competition last season in the State Meet.

On Saturday (Jan. 19), Badillo will be one of 135 athletes honored at the National Girls and Women’s in Sports Day luncheon at Chaparral High School.

The luncheon is hosted by the Douglas County Educational Foundation and Douglas County School District to recognize young women who exhibit outstanding athletic accomplishments and character in the Douglas County Schools.

Ten girls from each middle school and five athletes from each Douglas County High school will be honored along with alumni and coaches at the seventh annual luncheon.

“There are a lot of accomplished athletes and students in our schools and so I was really surprised and honored,” said Badillo. “I didn’t realize what it was until I sat down in my classroom, read it and then I got really excited.”

Badillo, who lives in Elizabeth and transferred to Legend from St. Mary’s Academy where she finished high in the Class 4A state diving championships as a freshman and sophomore, hopes to start diving this month after being sidelined with a hip injury.

“I had to have surgery on my elbow and a lot of the girls in my gymnastics program tried diving,” explained Badillo. “So I tried diving and really didn’t like it at first because it was new and I had to go on my head which is a big no-no in gymnastics.

“I was like I’m going to be an athlete no matter what and I kept going at it and I turned out to really love it.”

Badillo believes she will quickly be able to regain her competitive edge once the okay is given to resume diving.

“I’m just sort of visualizing,” said Badillo who will dive for the University of Denver next season. “I go to all the practices and watch the girls dive to see what works and what doesn’t. Then I watch my coach correcting them and I figure out what they did wrong and what I should do.

“I’m not out there per say but mentally I’m pretending I’m doing dives. So physically I’m out of the sport but mentally, I’m not.”
