Girls hoops: Jags impressive in win over Ponderosa
Rock Canyon’s top three scorers stepped forward last Friday to lead the Jaguars to a 65-32 win over Ponderosa in the Continental League girls opener for both teams.
Kendall Koslosky had a game-high 19 points for fifth-ranked Rock Canyon (1-0, 11-2) while Erin McClarie added 18 points and Lexy Thorderson finished with 13 points.
The league’s leading scorer, Kari Keogh, had 13 points to pace the Lady Mustangs (0-1,3-8). Keogh was averaging 16.1 points per game heading into this week’s action.
FALCONS SOAR - No. 3 Highlands Ranch quickly took the suspense out of last Friday’s Continental League showdown against No. 6 Chaparral.
The Falcons jumped to a 33-6 halftime lead and steamrolled to a 71-36 win over the Wolverines.
Kelsey Wainwright scored 24 points for the Falcons (1-0, 10-3) while Katie Longwell’s 17 points were high for Chaparral (0-1, 9-3).
STREAKS OVER - Legend ended a three-game losing skid with a 58-48 league win over Littleton as the Lions had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Mataya Racek scored 22 points in the win for the Titans (1-0, 5-6). Joey Sale, the Continental League’s leading rebounder, had 11 rebounds.
Laura Puchino had 14 points, eight steals and four assists for the Lions (0-1, 7-6).
DOUBLED UP - Mountain Vista led 39-13 at halftime and went on to double up Heritage, 50-25, in the league opener.
Karlee Schwartzkopf and Maddie Whetstone each had eight points for the Golden Eagles (1-0, 11-2).
Freshman Paige Keller finished with 10 rebounds and six steals.
LUTHERAN WINS TWO - Lutheran, No. 2 in the Class AA poll, collected two Metro League wins last week with a 41-27 win over Holy Family, the state’s third ranked 3A team, and a 49-27 triumph over Kent Denver.
Jennifer Vigil had 17 points in each game to spark the Lions (3-0, 9-0).
TWO MORE WINS - Unbeaten and No. 2 Arapahoe won two more Centennial League games as the Warriors smashed Eaglecrest, 53-22, and demolished Overland, 90-33.
Staci Lukasiewicz scored 13 points and Karlyn Johnson had 12 in the win over Eaglecrest.
Arapahoe (4-0, 13-0) had five players score in double figures, led by Kara Riley’s 16 points in the romp over Overland as 11 of 12 Warriors players scored in the game.
VALOR GOES 2-1 - Valor Christian lost 67-39 to Palmer last week but recovered with a 59-42 win over Pine Creek and a 55-29 victory over Heritage.
Kendall Bradbury had 35 points in the three games for the Eagles (7-11) while Caroline Bryan scored 20 points against Pine Creek and had 10 points against Heritage.
FALCONS MOVE UP - Highlands Ranch moved past Arapahoe and the Falcons are now ranked second behind Regis Jesuit in the Class 5A girls basketball poll released Monday.
Unbeaten Arapahoe is third. Rock Canyon is fifth and Chaparral dropped to eighth.
